As part of an AToL Protostomes project to assemble the basic backbone of the protostome tree of life, we assembled a diverse collection of Annelida. When densely sampled, Annelida has never been shown to be monophyletic with molecular sequence data. Also evidence has mounted that former phyla such as Echiura, Sipuncula and Pogonophora (including Vestimentifera) need to be considered as annelids. But relationships among these taxa and the majo annelid groups, and most imortantly the root of the annelid tree have remained elusive.
