Munnopsid Isopods
Isopods are most commonly seen as rolly poleys or pill bugs found under logs or in other moist terrestrial habitats. Munnopsid isopods on the other hand are found primarily in the deep sea and look more like spiders than crustaceans. Munnopsids are a particularly interesting group because they are believed to have diversified in the deep sea while most deep-sea animal groups are believed to have invaded deep waters more recently. They are particularly interesting to me because there are many pelagic species and they have evolved spectacular morphology and behaviors to survive in the water column instead of on the seafloor.
